Socrates s Principle Of Opposites - 1919 Words

Socrates s (Plato s) Principle of Opposites states that the same thing cannot do or undergo opposite things; not, at any rate, in the same respect, in relation to the same thing, at the same time. (436c) This is significant because it allows him to provide an avenue for proving that the soul contains more than one part via the use of internal conflict. He states that if an instance of opposites should occur, it would not be because the same thing was influenced in two opposing ways simultaneously, but because multiple things of a similar type were being influenced. He uses a top to illustrate. A top has two axes, and the top can be in motion in one way while remaining still in the other (436e). It cannot both be moving and still in the vertical sense, nor can it be both moving and still in the horizontal (he calls it circumference), but it can be moving in one way while still in the other. Thus, the top spins, but doesn t waver or move around (436e). He moves the example into the rea lm of agency. This principle of opposities applies also to the archer, he says, whose one hand is pulling and the other pushing in order to launch the arrow (439c). Socrates asks Glaucon if he s heard of thirsty persons denying themselves a drink (439d), and suggests that this seeming case of opposites (wanting to drink, not wanting to drink) arises from a similar case of differences. Just as the archer uses two hands to achieve his end, the soul has more than one part directing one sShow MoreRelatedPlato s Phaedo For The Immortality Of The Soul1701 Words   |  7 PagesPlato s final argument in Phaedo for the immortality of the soul is one of the most interesting topics of all time. The argument of whether the soul exists has been debated for years and even today. Perspectives on Humanities Free Essays

I remember a boy named Alexander, a boy who turned out to be my greatest companion. I will justify my master’s life to be the most productive one, although death came along at an early age of 33 he had reached what he wanted in his life and he had surpassed all the battles that came along his way. My master’s life was not an ordinary life, he became of what he is because of his hard work, dedication, wisdom and his will. We will write a custom essay sample on Perspectives on Humanities or any similar topic only for you Order Now He was a man of honor and great courage.   Let me tell you how Alexander and I met and became comrade. Alexander was just a young boy at the tender age of twelve when I was brought to his father first for the cost of thirteen talents. I was a wild young stud then but Alexander was wise enough to know why am I not at ease with my rider, he adequately studied me, talked to me softly and rode me into the sun so that I would not be able to see my own shadow; seeing my own shadow caused me to be shy. Alexander named me Bucephalus or Oxhead, he owned there and then.  In the early days of my years he was my mentor, he taught me how to be tough and strong enough for any battles that was ahead of us. He trained me how to be a stallion that is worthy of being called a wondrous one. He was my protector during battles; he gave his might during those times and gave what I have to give to protect him also. It was a wonderful life I had with him, I gave everything that I have got for he was my master and I owe everything to him. As a young boy, Alexander learned how to distance himself from the shadow of his father. Alexander and I grew up together, to say the truth; we were like of the same age.   What King Phillip and Alexander had was a competitive relationship; he loved her mother so much though. Because of this, he mends his own ways to be able to surpass what his father had reached and to be able to proudly say that he is Alexander the great conqueror. We have travelled the world together, seen the beauty of each and every track of land we lay our foot upon, and I have been his accomplice when he managed to conquer the world and built his mighty empire. Alexander has learned to do things in his own way even when he was still a child. I was one of the chosen few who have seen how he had managed to rule the world not because he was a descendant of the King of Macedonia, King Phillip but because he was Alexander, a great warrior. I have been a witness to what Alexander had done; I was a witness to his greatness in the battlefield. I was there with him, I’ve seen him do things the smart way or what have become to people the Great way.   Alexander was always a tough leader; he had managed to show this during our restless battles that we have both been through. His troop were always there to assist him whenever he needed them, his people showed loyalty to him and he showed his loyalty to them as well. Although Alexander was hard on the battlefield he was not as hard when it comes to me. He showed me the love that I needed; he never pushed me to my limits. Alexander would always know whenever I need caress and he would always give it to me. To my mighty king, Alexander the great, I salute him for the many things he had taught me. I wouldn’t have been who I am if not because of him. I thank you Alexander, my comrade, for I had the opportunity to be with you on your last battle. Life wouldn’t be this meaningful for me if you were not my master, and for that I am thankful. I was lucky to be there with you during your last battle. To my mentor, friend, companion and master, Alexander, thank you and Goodbye. May the fruit of your hardships be recognized by the whole Universe, may your legend be told in the future generations of human race, and may your name become undying and forever living in the hearts of your people (â€Å"The Confessions of Alexander the Great: 33 Lessons in Greatness,†). Cultural Competency In Health Care Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Cultural Competency In Health Care. Answer: Introduction Communication refers to the action of transferring information, ideas or thoughts from one place to another according to Nemeth (2008). The main goal of communication is to be able to comprehend the information that is relayed to you. Different categories of transferring information that may include: verbal communication or speech such as radio, phone, television, directly face to face and other media, non-oral communication; this could be by body signs and gestures, act or even the dress code, written messages like by means memos, letters, emails, magazines, newspapers, books and via other media and Visuals such as logos, maps, graphs, and charts that can relay or communicate messages. Communication in healthcare is a very important tool available for giving the patients great care and provides their satisfaction. In health care setting, it must have a purpose that revolves around the needs of a patient (Bryan,2009). Communication process Messages are relayed as illustrated in figure 1 below. Feedback from the patient will show us how the message was understood and gives an opportunity for the health care giver to clarify and correct any confusion and misunderstanding soon as they arise (Bryan, 2009). Effective communication is transferring messages simply and clearly to other people as well as receiving back the information with little or no misinterpretation as much as possible. It requires that the physician, caregivers, and all the other teams understand the patient and any experiences expressed (Burnard,1992). With a wide spectrum of team members providing the care during the process of healing of the patients from the doctors, nurses to housekeeping and catering teams, loved ones, and family, miscommunication may occur causing unintentional harm to the patient (Pagano, 2017). We can refer to anything that interferes with the main goal of communication as noise. Noise can greatly interfere with the understanding and interpretations of messages and significantly affect the interaction perceptions with others. These strategies may help to reduce communication noise and result in maximum communication efficiency in a healthcare setting: Sender/ health care giver: It is important to be clear, concise and use simple language, create a trust, give enough information, be aware of your body language and most importantly give ample time to the patient to decipher the information. Recipient/ Patient: patient needs to be more attentive, ask for clarification if not sure, confirm the message was understood and be more aware of the body non-verbal language. At our health care facility, we are passionate about patient care and communication . All the teams of various departments have numerous chances daily to have an impact positively on the experiences and satisfaction on many patients. This is the reason all team members are trained to avoid any barrier that may hinder taking care of the patients excellently( Arnold Boggs 2015). Common barriers that hinder effective communication in health care Jargon: Use of technical or unfamiliar terms Taboos and Emotional barriers: It may be difficult for some people to express their opinions and emotions on some topics regarded as taboo in their communities. A different point of view and perception. Physical disabilities like speech and hearing problems. Lack of interest, attention irrelevance to recipient and distractions. Lack of understanding the language and accents Physical barriers to non-verbal communication: Not being able to decipher body language may make communication being not effective. Prejudices and expectations that may end up in stereotyping and false assumptions. Some people apply selective hearing and thus making incorrect conclusions. Cultural differences: Cultures vary greatly in social interaction. Most common complaints in healthcare in relation to Information systems and communication are; bad attitude and mannerism, lack of information, misleading and incorrect information and special needs not being accommodated (Pagano,2017). Improving communication tools and behavior Provide enough information to the patients more compassionately. Put in place a range of communication strategies and tools. Get feedback from the patient to gauge whether they understood the information provided. Address each patient differently depending on their level of understanding and be aware that they may not be familiar with the healthcare information. Briefings prior to the beginning of a shift can get the staff is at the same start point of events, do away with surprises and positively work together as a team. By using hospitality methodologies and guidelines established by Disney Institute, members of various teams are equipped with knowledge and skills to communicate most effectively with the patient they serve. They are taught principles, skills, and guidelines to enable them to have meaningful connections with these patients and give quality healthcare (Cockerell, 2013). We have put in place this acronym AWARE which means; Am available to assist Welcome Ask if I can assist Revisit and review what was done and explain what will be done next Exit with kind words Special rules have been put in place that all the team members are trained to usedont pass whenever the call lights go on, members must check on the patient even it was accidentally put and act appropriately. Conclusion Research shows when there are strong relationships between team members skills of communication and a patients capability to follow the medical recommendations, chronic medical conditions that are self-managed, and adopting preventative health behaviors. The ability of the team members to explain, listen and empathize can profoundly impact positively on biological and functional health results as well as the patient satisfaction of the care experience. Communication among the various team members of the healthcare has an influence of the work relationships, job satisfaction, and overall patient safety. In providing great care and satisfaction of the patient while improving their well-being in a healthcare setting or hospital, the greatest most important tool is communication. References Arnold, E. What is Art Argumentative Essay Example For Students

What is Art? Argumentative Essay Art can mean many different things to many different people and was one of the earliest ways in which man has expressed him or herself to others, whether it was through cave drawings or hieroglyphics. It does not begin or end with just drawing or painting, items typically considered art, or the many other recognized facets of art including architecture, drama, literature, sculpting, and music. The writing of Beowulf, one of the earliest known written prose, or the Greek plays which have influenced drama since their inception, are considered some of the greatest forms of art in history. Art can allow us pleasure just simply through the process of creating. Art can allow us to express ourselves to give us better insight into our own feelings. Art can, in contrast, allow us to stir emotions from within the viewer, occasionally leaving the viewer with an awakened or refreshed outlook. Some may only consider a work as art if it requires a particular skill from the artist, however, art can actually be viewed as simply another form of communication. We will write a custom essay on What is Art? Argumentative specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now No matter what form this expression takes, whether dance, poetry or the painted canvas, people have reasons for pursuing the need to create. Dance, as a form of art, allows the person or persons to express themselves through the movements of their bodies, whether the dancing takes place on a stage, in a theater, or on the floor of a dance club. This non-verbal art form can allow a dancer to express stories and strong feelings of emotion, such as sadness, sexuality and joy or may just simply offer an outlet for energy. Dancing as a fine art can incorporate numerous other artistic outlets as well, ranging from the writing of the story, the music and the musicians, the designing of sets to the creation of simple or lavish costumes. This bringing together of artistic expressions from numerous other sources can be witnessed in other forms, such as plays and festivals, which allow a diverse collective to share thoughts and styles, these being the most public of art forms. Poetry is another art form that offers an environment to the creative or expressive need. Writing poetry can be used as an aid to help think through the conflicting emotions that accompany life. It is an art much as gardening is. An inspiration for a poem can be a seed. The seed is planted on paper and usually, though not always, after tending to it the seed begins to take shape until it suddenly blooms. Poems such as Byron’s â€Å"She Walks in Beauty†, Frost’s â€Å"The Road Not Taken† and Shakespeare’s â€Å"Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day† all began as seeds and have long since been considered works of art. Painting and drawing—probably one of the highest acknowledged forms of art—incorporates all aspects of the need to create. The artwork can be produced simply for the desire to create, whether it is just the study of the human body or the recreation of nature through the various colors, textures and the styles available to the artist. Nature, commonly reflected in paintings, serves as a great source of inspiration to artists. Painting can also allow the artist to express his or her own emotions by projecting them onto the canvas, demonstrating an ability to communicate thoughts and feelings through a material object. It is possible to express entire emotions, thoughts or stories within a frame, allowing the eye to capture everything that the artist wishes to convey, or more often forcing the audience to participate in the painting in order to achieve the meaning that may not be obvious from the first glance. Whether intentional or not, a painting can be one of the most stimulating to the feelings of an audience, sometimes leaving a lasting impression upon the soul that viewed it. Art may be described by simply saying that it is an act of expression used by a person. .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 , .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 .postImageUrl , .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 , .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15:hover , .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15:visited , .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15:active { border:0!important; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15:active , .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15 .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u31ffe4e2d18e031a52f77865f72bed15:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The gap between rich and poor in the world today EssayThis description prevents boundaries from binding any art form one may choose, because the potential of the arts are and should remain limitless. Critics have spent centuries trying to create a clear definition of art. There is not nor can there ever be a clear explanation because it is ever-changing and expanding beyond any confines people may try to impose, whether self-imposed or influenced by critics. Defining art is only limited to the imagination of the creator and audience. For something to be classified as art it is first dependent upon who you ask, which can not help but be influenced by their personal tastes concerning what they find pleasurable and what form the art takes that best suits them.
